An unidentified young man met a tragic end as an enraged mob set him on fire on October 1st, 2023. The incident occurred when he allegedly attempted to steal a generator from a modern church situated along Atiku Abubakar Road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to an eyewitness, Amb Dignity Usenekong, who provided an account of the incident, the suspect willingly faced the consequences. He was apprehended by the mob on Sunday night, October 1, 2023, and subjected to machete attacks before being set on fire.
Sharing the tragic incident on Facebook, Usenekong wrote, “In this photograph, you see a young man who willingly faced his fate today. To clarify, it’s a thief who was apprehended today, on the 1st of October 2023, while attempting to steal a generator from a modern church in my vicinity, Atiku Abubakar Avenue, after switching off the generator that was running,” he recounted.
“He faced the wrath of the mob, enduring numerous machete wounds and being pelted with stones before eventually being dragged onto the asphalt road and set on fire.
“While I strongly disapprove of mob justice and encourage people to desist from theft, I hold the belief that this young man is already in Heaven, albeit prematurely, because he was confessing and reciting the Lord’s Prayer before being ultimately set ablaze.”
Another eyewitness, who posted pictures of the incident on Facebook, commented, “Even after witnessing this burning, some individuals still haven’t learned their lesson. Just yesterday, on Saturday, they carried out a robbery in my neighborhood at around 2 am.”
