Bukola Arugba, the former wife of Damola Olatunji, has garnered attention by offering praise to Yoruba movie actor Femi Adebayo and actress Lateef Adedimeji for their achievements in the film industry.
Alongside a captivating image shared online, she expressed her desire to relish the experience of watching “Jagun Jagun” movies on Netflix once more. She also conveyed her appreciation for the excellent work done by Femi Adebayo and his team.
Tunde Kelani, a father figure and mentor, once wisely stated, “You can’t impress people from other countries (western world) by trying to imitate their culture through your works.” He has undeniably exemplified this principle through his own creations over the years. Works like “SHAWORO IDE,” “AGOGO EWO,” and more have distinctly captured our indigenous Yoruba essence, reflecting rich cultural aesthetics, attire, folklore, tales, and melodies.
To elaborate on Tunde Kelani’s insight, it’s a challenge to replicate someone else’s identity as you aren’t them and can’t authentically portray them. The outcome often appears comical and far from the original. The true path to impressing the world lies in presenting what is genuinely yours, something they’ve never encountered—your CULTURE, your LANGUAGE, your HERITAGE.
A person’s downfall commences when they forsake their own heritage and embrace another’s. Your culture is unique to you. I’m immensely proud that our films are setting records. They are being acknowledged globally, crossing language and cultural barriers, as our YORUBA LANGUAGE shines through. Gratitude goes to ANIKULAPO, AGESHINKOLE, ORISA, and the recent sensation JAGUN JAGUN, brought to us by @femiadebayosalami, @odunomoadekola, and @kunleafo. This success extends beyond one tribe, not just Yoruba or Nigeria, but resonates across Africa.
