Early life and education


In 1960, Neil Lane was born in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. Born and raised in Brooklyn. His mother was a buyer at the Macy’s department store, while his father was a jeweler. He studied sculpting while a student at the High School of Art and Design in New York City.

He studied in design and received an honors degree from Parsons School of Design after finishing high school. He worked as an intern for Andy Warhol while attending Parsons, who later on served as both a mentor and a major inspiration.

He established Neil Lane Designs, his first jewelry business, in Santa Monica in 1982. He started creating jewelry for famous people in 1989, including Madonna and Cher. He created a line of jewelry in 1990 that was available only on QVC and made $1 million in sales in the first hour. He began creating outfits for famous people who appeared on The Bachelor that year, including Chris Harrison, Emily Maynard, and Arie Luyendyk Jr.
