The recently suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been apprehended by the Department of State Services (DSS). The arrest reportedly took place shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended Emefiele on Friday night.
According to the source, the secret police had previously planned to detain Emefiele, but their efforts were hindered due to the discreet intervention of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The source further revealed that the Department of State Services (DSS) had gone as far as obtaining a court order to facilitate the arrest of Godwin Emefiele on charges of alleged terrorism financing.
However, when approached for a comment, the spokesperson of the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunnaya, declined to provide any information on the matter.
In the meantime, the President, through a statement issued by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey, directed Godwin Emefiele to temporarily transfer his duties to the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in charge of operations, Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi. This arrangement would remain in effect until the conclusion of the investigation into Emefiele’s activities while in office.
Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi was born on March 7, 1962. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from 1978 to 1983. He continued his education at the same university, earning a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After working as a consultant engineer at Mek-ind Associates between 1984 and 1989, Shonubi decided to redirect his educational and professional path by pursuing an MBA with a specialization in finance.
Equipped with an MBA, he transitioned into the IT industry, which ultimately shaped his career trajectory.
After his time at Inlaks Computers Ltd as a marketing executive from 1989 to 1990, Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi made significant strides in his career. In 1990, he took on the role of Head of Treasury Operations at Citibank Nigeria Ltd, marking a significant milestone.
In 1993, Shonubi joined Agusto & Co. Ltd as a supervising consultant, where he worked for three years. He later transitioned to MBC International Ltd in the capacity of Deputy General Manager, overseeing banking operations and IT.
In 1999, he embarked on a new venture as Vice President of Operations and Information Technology at First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Ltd. However, in 2003, he left FCMB and assumed the role of Executive Director of Operations and Information Technology at Ecobank Nigeria Plc.
Shonubi’s expertise extended beyond the banking sector. He served as the Director of Information Technology and Corporate Services at Renaissance Securities Nigeria Ltd. Additionally, from 2009 to 2012, he held the position of Executive Director of Operations, Technology, and Services at Union Bank of Nigeria Ltd.
Prior to his appointment into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2018, Shonubi served as the Managing Director/CEO of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS).
