Although Richard Dobson was unhappy with how Gillingham gave up their three goals against MK Dons, he gave his players credit for persevering until the very end to almost earn a point.
Despite a strong start to the second half, Gills lost by two goals after falling behind early in the match.
Given that the hosts were able to control the game’s pace thanks to the early goal, Dobson offered his opinion on the match.
After manager Gareth Ainsworth’s surgery on Friday, the Gills assistant manager gave a positive update.
Opinions regarding the game…
We were a little too plodding with the ball in the first half, in my opinion. somewhat sluggish in our performance.
I said, “We weren’t purposeful enough,” at halftime. We assigned ourselves a bit of a mountain to climb and gave up in five minutes.
You’re constantly afraid of being struck on the counterattack, and we’re playing MK Dons‘ game instead of ours.
We had a great response at the start of the second half, and it was frustrating that we gave up during that play.
We would have had our tails up and the game would have been quite different if we had scored at that point.
Unfortunately, they have a two-goal lead and can now sit deep and counterattack because we gave up a fairly careless goal when we were ahead. Until the very end, I’m pleased with the work.
We persisted and created opportunities. Unfortunately, they could have scored four or five goals today just as easily as we could.
An update regarding Gareth Ainsworth…
The good news is that the operation was successful. I’ll chat to him when he’s ready and well enough to do so because he will be recovering in the hospital over the next few days.
Regarding the ambitions that were given up…
The first one, in my opinion, is the result of a mishit shot that becomes a pass. I believe that the cross that Glenn Morris was carrying has fallen to their player. Such events do occur.
Those things can happen, and you have the pandemonium of set pieces. It just so happens to land directly on the man’s foot.
The second one was very frustrating because we gave up the ball while trying to play out, even though we had been playing forward during the first half.
After posing a threat, we abruptly chose to back down and ended up in hot water.
You saw the goal open as [Nathaniel] Mendez-Laing cut inside, and you thought, ‘This isn’t good.’
The third one is achieved through improved athleticism and a counterattack.
They brought Mendez-Laing down from a higher category because of his speed.
It is possible for them to hit you on the counterattack if you have set yourself up for failure.
One of Seb Palmer-Houlden’s first goals
Seb will score; he has goals in him. That is something I am certain of. He has been missed. We have had to slowly work him back because he has been a bit of a loss. Seb is going to get goals. He has a good pace and is a poacher. Having him back in the fold is a pleasure.
Ahead of Tuesday’s Vertu Trophy matchup with Colchester…
We need to give certain players who are recuperating from injuries some playing time. Although it will be a distinct side, it will be a powerful one.
We appreciate the competition, which is why we have a squad. I’m excited for Tuesday, see what happens if we make some minor adjustments, and most importantly, I’m excited for next Saturday and returning to Priestfield.
