This Saturday, Gillingham takes on MK Dons in an attempt to recover from their home defeat at the hands of Harrogate Town.
Gareth Ainsworth, the manager of Gillingham, is certain that his club won’t suffer the same fate as they did in the previous two seasons.
Before losing 1-0 at home to Harrogate Town on Saturday, the Gills had a club-record 21-game winning streak. This was Ainsworth’s first loss since taking over the team nine games prior to the end of the previous campaign.
The Gills’ loss caused them to drop out of the top spot in League 2, and they will now play against MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.
The Gills had a strong start to the previous season, finishing first in October, but they had a downturn and ended up in 17th place.
Although they finished 2023–2024 in 12th place, they were also in first place throughout the first two months of the previous season.
This time, Ainsworth’s specifics will be different. “No one will feel sorry for themselves,” he stated. Nobody will be asking themselves, “Oh my God, what’s happening?”
“People are free to compare us to previous years if they so choose.
This is not the same squad. I am in control of this Gillingham team, and I will make the most of each and every week.
That will include working extremely hard at MK Dons and attempting to score as many goals as possible.
“As usual, we’ll go to win that game. It stings, but I’m happy the boys are disappointed [after last Saturday] and proud of them. We will return shortly.
“This run has been fantastic. Coming off of it isn’t the worst thing in the world, in a way.
“People frequently ask when they plan to stop using it.
When will it take place? “It has occurred. Now, I want to see how the players, staff, and fans respond.
“I am really optimistic, but I would like to see how people respond. We can defeat anyone in this league, I’m sure of it.
It won’t be easy to bounce back because Ainsworth will miss the trip to MK Dons because of a scheduled heart procedure tomorrow (Friday), and they’re up against a well-resourced team that hasn’t been able to live up to their own expectations thus far.
He remarked, “I want to see how the boys react.”
“They are a group of people that are hurt, but I am aware of their potential. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to return and resume winning games.
At this point in the season, third place on the table is excellent. I have consistently stated that I will come into this club and make improvements to what I came into.
I believe that everyone may affirm that it has undoubtedly occurred.
It’s absurd to consider that we have only lost one of our last 22 games. We’ll pick it up again and look forward to working hard with the lads to properly train and develop them.
“I can get help from my amazing staff and support team.” Last weekend, Gillingham’s scoring streak came to a stop as well, falling just short of matching a club record for goals scored in back-to-back league games. With the record at 20, they stalled at 18.
Ainsworth’s team appeared to have resolved their goal-scoring issue, which had been a significant one for the previous four seasons. Over the weekend, they produced a lot, but they were unable to complete.
The Gills manager declared, “We had 18 or 19 shots, which is an absolute bonanza of shots.”
