The loss to Harrogate on Saturday, according to Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth, has only made him more confident in his team.
The Gills lost 1-0 at Priestfield, ending their lengthy winning streak, but Ainsworth commended the team’s dedication and spirit.
Following his first loss as manager, the Gills manager remarked, “You do learn plenty from a defeat.”
“I discovered that my guys weren’t lacking in effort. They put their all into it. The tackles were flying into them. Headers were where they were heading.
“Their enthusiasm for the club is evident.” It was matched by the fans.
I’ve discovered that we’re in a solid position, and I have no doubt that this season will be incredibly thrilling.
“Gillingham Football Club and Rome weren’t created overnight, but we’ve had an amazing six months, and I’m proud of all those boys and their hard work.”
Ainsworth and his backroom staff will not alter their strategy for the upcoming match if they lose.
“As a football manager, consistency is really important,” Ainsworth stated.
“I won’t change at all, and the boys need to know where they are.” I always think it’s good to be optimistic.
“Some really good performances, some amazing performances [on Saturday].” There were one or two guys who were in a lot of pain, but I don’t single them out. They poured themselves dry and gave it their all, and it was fantastic.
This season, the Gills have battled back from behind multiple times, and Ainsworth remained confident that they would do again against Harrogate.
But a strong second half went unrewarded. “Everyone thought it would happen, didn’t they?”
The Gills manager said.
“I believe that supporters are aware that they will witness opportunities, the guys’ attempts, and their attempts to catch up and score goals by racing at people.
“I’m really proud of it; it’s an exciting place now.”
