Headline: “I’m Not Done Yet”: Brandon Garrison Opens Up About His Shocking Decision to Stay.

In an era where college athletes increasingly declare early for the NBA Draft, Brandon Garrison’s decision to stay another year in college basketball has sent shockwaves across the sports world. Many expected the 6’11” Oklahoma State standout to enter the 2025 NBA Draft and secure his place among basketball’s elite. But instead of chasing the professional dream just yet, Garrison surprised fans, analysts, and even some of his teammates with a powerful message: “I’m not done yet.”

In an exclusive interview with Sports Daily News, Garrison opened up for the first time about the deeply personal reasons behind his decision—reasons that go far beyond the hardwood.

A Decision That Stunned the Basketball World

Garrison’s sophomore season was nothing short of electric. Averaging 17.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game, he became the cornerstone of Oklahoma State’s defense and a reliable offensive threat. Mock drafts consistently listed him as a late first-round to early second-round pick, with scouts praising his athleticism, shot-blocking instincts, and improving mid-range jumper.

So when the 20-year-old center announced on social media that he would be returning for another season, many were left puzzled.

But the decision, as Garrison reveals, had been weeks in the making.

“This Is Bigger Than Me”

Sitting comfortably in the locker room of Gallagher-Iba Arena, Garrison speaks with the calm intensity of a player who knows what he wants.

“I’ve always believed that when I make a decision, it has to be for the right reasons—not just the popular ones,” he says. “For me, it wasn’t about rushing to the league. It was about finishing something I started.”

While many assumed the decision was financially or strategically motivated, Garrison insists it came down to legacy—and loyalty.

“We had unfinished business here,” he says, referring to Oklahoma State’s heartbreaking Sweet 16 exit this past March. “We were so close. And I just couldn’t walk away knowing I could help bring a championship to this school.”

But there’s more.

Family, Faith, and Finding Himself

Garrison, known for his maturity and grounded demeanor, also shared how conversations with his family, coaches, and faith leaders helped shape his decision. A devout Christian, Garrison says he spent weeks praying and reflecting before coming to peace with the idea of staying.

“Everyone around me was supportive—whether I stayed or left,” he says. “But deep down, I felt like I needed one more year—not just to improve my game, but to grow as a man.”

His mother, Cynthia Garrison, says she wasn’t surprised by her son’s decision.

“He’s always done things his way—quietly, thoughtfully,” she shares. “He’s not chasing the spotlight. He’s chasing purpose.”

Leadership and Legacy

What’s also clear is that Garrison views his return as an opportunity to lead—on and off the court.

“There are freshmen coming in who’ll need guidance,” he says. “I want to be that voice, that presence. I’ve learned so much these past two years, and now it’s time to give back.”

He’s already taken younger players under his wing during summer workouts, organizing extra gym sessions, watching game film, and even helping a few teammates with academics.

Cowboys Head Coach Mike Boynton calls Garrison’s return “a program-defining moment.”

“Brandon coming back sends a message to every kid in our program and every recruit out there: winning matters, loyalty matters, growth matters. He’s not just a player—he’s a culture builder.”

What’s Next for Garrison and the Cowboys

With Garrison returning and a strong recruiting class arriving in Stillwater, expectations are sky-high for the 2025–26 season. The Cowboys are now seen as serious contenders for the Big 12 title and a deep tournament run.

Analysts believe another strong season could push Garrison’s draft stock into the lottery, but he insists that’s not his focus.

“The NBA will be there,” he says. “Right now, I’m here. Fully here. And I’m going to give this team everything I’ve got.”

More Than Just a Player

In a sports world that often prioritizes immediate gain, Brandon Garrison’s decision is a reminder that sometimes the biggest moves come from staying put. It’s not about fear or hesitation—it’s about purpose, patience, and heart.

“I came here to leave a legacy,” Garrison says, with a quiet fire in his eyes. “And I’m not finished writing my story yet.”

With a mindset like that, one thing is certain: Brandon Garrison’s final chapter at Oklahoma State is going to be one worth watching.
