Nigerian skit maker and actor, Abdulgafar Abiola, widely known as Cute Abiola, has responded to the Nigerian police’s threat of potential prosecution over his skits.
Taking to his social media platforms, the comedian had shared a video where he portrayed a police officer, humorously imitating the tendencies of Nigerian police officers and their association with bribes.
In response to the video, the Nigerian Police Force expressed their intention to conduct an investigation and, if necessary, pursue legal action against him for allegedly disrespecting the force’s uniform.
According to the Police’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejoba, in an official statement, Cute Abiola is accused of violating Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law.
Section 251 of the Criminal Code states that anyone who is not a member of the armed or police forces of Nigeria but wears the uniform of these forces or any dress that appears to be their uniform in a manner likely to bring contempt to that uniform or encourages someone else to wear such uniform is guilty of a simple offense. The penalty for this offense is imprisonment for three months or a fine of forty nairas.
The Police further argued that Cute Abiola’s actions are not only offensive but also undermine the dignity and honor of the men and women who wear the uniform while serving the nation.
As a result, the skit maker is now subject to investigation and potential prosecution for his portrayal in the skit.
Cute Abiola decided to express his nonchalant response to the police’s threat by sharing a meme in the comment section of a blog. In the meme, he depicted himself as being unbothered and unfazed by the situation, clearly showing that he was not taking the threat too seriously. The humorous and light-hearted approach showcased his resilience and determination to continue entertaining his fans despite the challenges he might be facing.
