“Controversy Surrounds Suspended EFCC Chairman Bawa as Video Reveals Alleged N223M Expenditure on Hotel Accommodation”

A video circulating on Instagram has sparked widespread reactions as it allegedly reveals how the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. AbdulRasheed Bawa, spent a staggering N223M on hotel accommodation for a 10-day period. This development has triggered concerns among netizens and the public at large.

On June 14th, 2023, Intel Region reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had approved the indefinite suspension of Mr. Bawa from his position, allowing for a thorough investigation into his conduct while in office. Weighty allegations of abuse of power had been leveled against the 43-year-old chairman, who hails from Jega, Kebbi State.

According to the viral Instagram video, an anonymous source publicly disclosed that Bawa had embarked on a lesser hajj, known as Umrah, along with his wife, children, parents, and other family members about a month ago. The source further claimed that during their stay in Jeddah and Mecca, Bawa and his family resided at the Sheraton hotel, with each room costing approximately $15,000 for a 10-day period. It was alleged that Bawa had paid for a total of six rooms.

In a surprising revelation, it was claimed that Bawa had spent approximately $300,000, equivalent to N223M, on hotel accommodations alone for the duration of their stay.

The video has raised eyebrows due to the apparent contradiction between the alleged lavish spending and the EFCC’s mandate for accountability and zero tolerance for embezzlement, mismanagement, and other forms of misconduct that could tarnish the commission’s reputation. The actions of the suspended chairman have brought further scrutiny to the organization.
